Various Character Design

Inventing fanciful characters is one of my favorite creative activities, whether to create them without specific guidelines or under strict rules.
It doesn't really matter, it's always fun!
Animal-inspired humans: the Sphynx Lady

This project's theme was transformation. A transformation from an animal into a human, to be exact.
I started with different animals (alpakas among others) but ended up with cats again. I chose a sphynx cat to turn it into a thin young lady.
Sphynx cats are thought to be an eccentric outsiders, all thanks to their looks. My Spynx Lady was supposed to be a tough and mischievous punk girl.
I made six variants of her look.

Creatures of poppy
It's worth taking inspiration from some shapes you see everyday - patterns that lay on tiles or wallpapers. This time the inspiration came from less traditional medium: poppy seeds spread on a piece of paper.
I made some photographs of poppy shapes and recreated creatures I saw in my head when looking at these photos.
Some of the poppy references were used more than once as they created interesting shapes from several perspectives.

Reviving fennel
Speaking of inspiration from nature, you can find plenty of references in plants: fruits, vegetables, herbs etc.
This time I wanted to create some fennel creatures. Its shape reminded me mainly of water animals but I also ended up with diplodocus-like beings.

Seven Sinful Swines
The idea was simple - to make pig personalisation of seven deadly sins.

The Hunter, the Weapon & the Victim
The task was to invent and design appearance of the hunter, his weapon and his potential victim. I went with a chubby farmer with swelled belly living in a world where people grow sweets in their gardens.
His biggest enemy is Cukierczyk - a large sugar loving animal, constantly devastating his crops. Female Cukierczyk has a pink, swirl pattern on her rump during oestrus. The hunter knows his victim so he has grown a unique, big and extremaly sticky swirl lollipop, reminiscent of a female rump. This way the lollipop is twice as alluring. The farmer uses it as a trap for a poor creature which is unable to escape, once it touched the bait.

Designs for fabric print
These animals were designed for t-shirts that I gave as a gift to my friends

A towel design for the pedantic dog lover. Ironically, dogs are not always very clean.
The little image is a photo of a finished product.
Tarot cards
My interpretation of five Tarot cards - the Fool, the High Priestess, the Lovers, the Hanged Man & Death. This is not very traditional way of depicting them but those takes were meant to be modern and quite humorous.

A chicken who wanted to fly (but couldn't)
This poor thing was born with wings that don't work properly. It's no wonder this chicken's idealizing birds that can fly.
One day she woke up to a charming song sang by a beautiful bird. It inspired her to start the great journey in search of life's meaning (and hopefully, the magical ways that could make her fly).
We can only guess whether she succeeded or not.

Watercolor's Unpredictability

These two outlined paint stains have become a more rendered characters later.

I find watercolors great for an art block. You can play with their unpredictability which can help the creative process. All this creatures were watercolour-inspired.
